How to Move a Gold IRA to a New Custodian

The short answer: You can move a gold IRA to a new custodian with a trustee-to-trustee transfer, usually without selling your metal. The new custodian requests the transfer, the old custodian releases the account, and the metal either stays at the same depository and is re-registered, or is shipped between approved vaults. It is not a taxable event and does not count against the once-a-year rollover limit. Expect a closing or transfer fee from the old custodian, often around $100 to $250.

Why move a gold IRA to a new custodian?

  • Lower fees. Yearly costs differ meaningfully. See our custodian comparison.
  • Better service or online access.
  • A dealer problem. If your dealer closed, went bankrupt or treated you badly, moving custodians or changing the dealer on file can separate you from them.
  • Storage preferences, such as segregated storage or a different depository.
  • Consolidation of several IRAs in one place.

Should you transfer in kind or in cash?

In-kind transfer (move the metal) Cash transfer (sell first)
What happens Metal moves or is re-registered to the new custodian Old custodian sells the metal; cash moves
Dealer spread None You lose the buyback spread, then pay a premium to rebuy
Market timing You stay invested throughout Out of the market during the transfer
Possible costs Re-registration or shipping between vaults Selling and repurchasing costs
Best for Most transfers When you want different products anyway

Selling and rebuying can easily cost several percent in spreads and premiums. An in-kind transfer usually keeps far more of your money.

How does a gold IRA custodian transfer work, step by step?

  1. Get your current statement listing each product, quantity and the depository holding it.
  2. Open the new self-directed IRA of the same type: traditional to traditional, Roth to Roth.
  3. Confirm the new custodian accepts your depository and products. If it does not use your current vault, the metal must be shipped to one it does use.
  4. Sign the transfer request with the new custodian, marking it as an in-kind transfer of precious metals.
  5. The custodians coordinate. The old custodian releases the assets and the depository re-registers or ships them.
  6. Confirm the result. Check that every coin and bar appears on the new custodian’s statement and that the old account is closed.

In-kind metal transfers commonly take two to six weeks, longer if metal must be shipped between depositories.

Is a custodian transfer a taxable rollover?

No. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer between IRAs is not a distribution, so it is not taxed and is not reported as income. It also does not count toward the rule that limits indirect IRA-to-IRA rollovers to one per 12 months. Do not take possession of the metal or a check yourself. That would turn the move into a distribution or an indirect rollover with a 60-day deadline.

What fees should you expect?

Fee Who charges it Example
Account closing or transfer-out fee Old custodian STRATA Trust lists $250 to close an account
Asset re-registration Old or new custodian STRATA lists $100 per request
Depository handling or shipping Depository Varies; higher if metal moves between vaults
New account setup New custodian Often $0 to $50

Some new custodians or dealers reimburse transfer-out fees. Ask before you start, and make sure the fee savings outweigh the one-time cost.

What can go wrong?

  • Choosing a new custodian that does not accept your products or depository
  • Accidentally requesting a cash transfer and paying spreads twice
  • Mismatching account types, which can create a taxable conversion or error
  • Falling for a dealer that offers “free” transfers but steers you into high-premium coins
